The Chosen Mothers

The Chosen Mothers by Erma Bombeck (with a bit of an edit)

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit.

Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with life threatening illnesses are chosen?

Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation.

As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

“Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew. Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint Cecilia. Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint Gerard.”Finally, He passes a name to an angel and says, “Give her a child with cystic fibrosis.” The angel is curious. “Why this one God? She’s so happy.”

“Exactly” smiles God, “Could I give a child with cf a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel.”

“But, does she have patience?” asks the angel.

“I don’t want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she will handle it.”

“But, Lord, I don’t think she believes in you.” No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness.”

The angel gasps -”Selfishness? is that a virtue?”

God nods. “If she can’t separate herself from the child occasionally, she’ll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take anything her child does for granted. She will never consider a single step ordinary. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see…ignorance, cruelty, prejudice…and allow her to rise above them.” She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing my work as surely as if she is here by my side.”

Time to Baby Proof!!!

Since Mason turned 8 months old yesterday he decided that it was time to start crawling! It has been sooooo exciting to watch him figure it out! He is so determined to get at whatever we put in front of him, mostly that nuk or the netbook. On the other hand, this was the first milestone that he has started to reach that literally made my heart skip a beat because he is getting more and more independent! Some might say he also has a very independent personality already...and I thought I was a pretty good kid, so it must be Derek's behavior as a child we are getting payback for! HA! Well, in any case enjoy the video!

CF awareness

another video from Team Asher that was created by these great people who are spreading awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This video hits home a little more for me as, Asher is much closer to Mason's age in this one. It also shows a little more of treatments that Mason with some day sooner then later will be doing. Thank you to Team Asher for making these videos that really hit home!

Awareness Video

Great Strides...

I wanted to share an awesome video from a blog that I follow called Team Asher. This man and his wife are in the same fight for his son's life just as Derek and I are for Mason's. He does a video each year to help fund-raise for their Great Strides walk. They just held a silent auction that raised almost $13,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!!! The video has some clips that show how his son is a normal kid living life, but some clips that show you what happens behind the curtain of life that all people with CF have to do on a daily basis to survive. It makes me think about Mason and in how a few short months he will join those ranks of owning a vest that shakes the crap out of him (that cost $18,000...no joke there) and breathing in medicine twice a day to help thin the mucus in his lungs so he can breathe deeply.

We will be walking on May 15th in the Great Strides Walk to help raise money for research that will hopefully find a cure in Mason's lifetime! Please feel free to donate at: http://www.cff.org/great_strides/saraumnus

8 months old!

Boy oh Boy! Mason is getting big! 8 and 1/2 months old! What is Mason up to these days? He is pulling himself up from a sitting position to his knees. He hasn't quite figured out to pull himself up from a laying position yet. But this is why we dropped the crib a level a few weeks back. Mason has three teeth now with the 4th one ready to show it self any moment. He just started figuring out to get on all fours for a few seconds. He then falling back to the ground. In the past few days he has really mastered the army crawl and he moves FAST! On Easter, we witnessed him actually move forward few inches for the 1st time! When he is not crawling he is rolling like crazy. Time to get that gate! We have his 9 month well baby visit right on his 9month birthday. We also have another CF clinic visit on the 16th. So I can update all the stats then.

Mason is learning to drive early... yeah he is an overachiever!

Happy Easter 2011

Happy Belated Easter!

We spent the day in Union Grove yesterday. Mason was one spoiled boy for his first Easter! He actually got his first Easter "basket" in the mail from grandma Pam last week. He got two additional baskets at Grandma and Grandpa Umnus' house. The Easter Bunny was busy! We missed Grandma Pam, but she is coming down in 2 weeks to walk with us at the zoo to raise money to find a cure for CF.

Mason was in no mood to share his 1st Easter Basket with Mia!

Momma, how does the Easter Bunny tie that without thumbs?

Thanks Easter Bunny...I really like everything I got in my basket but the tag is my favorite!

"look no hands" :)

Look at what I can do...pull myself to my knees!

Great Strides 2011

We wanted to share this video that was created in loving memory of a child who lost his fight against Cystic Fibrosis. This video, we hope, will show you some of what Mason will eventually endure. There is no cure for this progressive "invisible" disease that affects 30,000 children and young adults in the U.S. I say that because although Mason may look healthy on the outside, he is NOT and will never be unless a cure is found. There is some very exciting news in the past few months about 2 drugs that are in clinical trials which are showing some unprecedented results! Results that bring even more hope to the reality of a cure. Sorry to say but these 2 drugs will not help Mason, but there is hope that once these drugs are finalized they will spur some others that will help Mason.

We will be walking in the Great Strides Walk at the Milwaukee Zoo on May 15th. All money raised goes to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. There is no governmental money given to help fund reasearch, so every 90 cents of a dollar donated to the CFF goes toward research. With that we hope that you will find it in your heart and pocketbook to donate any amount of money you could to help find a cure for Mason. Please click on the link below or on the "Great Strides" button on the upper right hand side of this page. Thanks again for all your support in our family's fight against Cystic Fibrosis.
